The first vessels in the project “Removal of the sunken German fleet from the Danube near Prahovo” were pulled out

Millennium Team, within the consortium with Aqua Mont Services, is engaged in the project of demining and removal of the sunken German war fleet from the Danube River near Prahovo, and after more than 80 years, the first vessels were pulled out of the water.

A German warship with a large amount of unexploded ordnance and weapons, as well as a fishing boat, was recovered from the river bottom. The ships were pulled out in one piece, with the help of cranes and special ropes for extraction. The diving works were carried out by highly qualified deminers, with appropriate certificates in the field of demining. About 50 people took part in the operation to remove the ships.

With the Employer being the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, with the support of the European Investment Bank, this project is of strategic importance for domestic and international river traffic.

Its goal is to remove the wrecks of sunken ships and improve the safety and conditions for navigation in this part of the international waterway, which is in line with the development plans of the EU transport system. It is a complex operation involving a series of systematic surveys, as well as the demining of unexploded mines and other ordnance on the river bottom and inside sunken vessels.

Work on the project began in July 2023 and is scheduled to end in July 2028.

The removal of the first sunken vessels from the riverbed is currently underway. This includes their underwater demining, bringing the wrecks to the surface and demining their interior. Before that, a hydrographic survey and the necessary diving research were done, which completed the first phase of the project.

The sunken ships are part of the German Black Sea Fleet, which during the retreat before the Red Army in September 1944, were planned to be sunk near Prahovo, in order to block the navigation on the Danube and slow down the advance of the Soviet forces.

In the previous phases of work at this site, Millennium Team, together with other companies of the international consortium, successfully completed work on the Report on the existence of unexploded ordnance on sunken German ships in the Prahovo area in 2021. A detailed survey of the riverbed from km 857 to km 862 of the waterway revealed the presence of a total of 40 shipwrecks, 18 more than expected.
